Creative Minds Take Flight - Origami Workshop for Sakal NIE Students in Kolhapur
Kolhapur, May 2025 — In a delightful blend of art and education, a unique Origami Workshop was recently conducted for school students associated with the Sakal NIE (Newspaper in Education) program in Kolhapur. The event aimed to introduce children to the meditative and creative world of origami—the Japanese art of paper folding.
Held at the city office of Sakal in Kolhapur, the workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 50 students from various schools. Guided by veteran origami artist Mandar Sharad Vaidya, who has been practicing origami for more than 38 years, the students explored basic to intermediate folding techniques using just paper and their imagination.
The session focused not only on creating artistic models like birds, flowers, and boxes, but also on developing vital life skills such as patience, concentration, and hand-eye coordination. Students were taught how origami can improve mental focus, aid in stress relief, and serve as a creative outlet beyond digital distractions.
Organized as a part of Sakal's ongoing initiative to provide holistic development opportunities to students, the workshop received appreciation from parents, teachers, and education coordinators alike. The hands-on nature of origami, combined with storytelling and real-world applications, made the session both fun and impactful.
“Origami helps children think differently. It teaches precision, discipline, and most importantly—joy,” said Mandar Deshpande.
With such overwhelming response, more origami workshops are expected to be held across the region in the coming months.
